Bubble Tea Garden, Gouda, The Netherlands

The clients own a bubble tea café in the heart of Gouda, The Netherlands. The garden is a private family space but required the option of opening it out to customers in the future.

An Eastern influence is apparent with green, textural planting. Bamboo and timber screen-like structures break up the space. A Japanese maple serves as a focal point at the rear of the garden, standing out against the dark fence.

Designs occasionally have to be adapted due to unforeseen complications in the build, and this was one such situation. A large concrete plinth was discovered just below the surface of the garden. Prohibitively expensive to remove, it was decided to create raised beds, thus creating a mix of planting levels. Though this too incurred a cost, the intimate spaces created in the design were emphasized bringing about a positive outcome.
